The Afterlives of Past Disquiet
Legacies, Unwritten Histories andTransnational Solidarity
Webinar in Three Sessions 7.12. | 8.12. | 10.12.2020, 6–8 pm CET
The webinar will discuss Past Disquiet, a research project by Lebanese curators Rasha Salti and Kristine Khouri, which traces the history of the International Art Exhibition for Palestine that was organized by the PLO and took place in Beirut in 1978 during the Lebanese Civil War. Despite its significant role within transnational solidarity networks of the time this exhibition has not been materially transmitted and is still not part of an official (art) historiography. The webinar will focus on Salti and Khouri’s research process that heavily relied on private archives as well as oral history and involved different interdisciplinary approaches to reactivate a historical political art project including exhibitions, a documentary film, book projects and a digital archive.
Guests: Reem Shilleh (independent curator and author), Jared McCormick (Acting Director of the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, New York University), Hannah Feldman (Associate Professor in Art History, Northwestern University), Rasha Salti (independent curator, researcher and author), Kristine Khouri (independent researcher and board member of the Arab Image Foundation).
Organizers: Daniel Berndt, Iris Fraueneder and Bruno Heller
