WORKSHOP

Art moderne et contemporain arabe : reconstitutions et convergences historiographiques

Zouina Ait Slimani and Joan Grandjean

INHA, Paris, Walter Benjamin room, 3.4.25, 10:30-12 am

Drawing inspiration from Ariella Azoulay's groundbreaking photographic exhibition and her concept of "unlearning imperialism," this workshop presents a innovative approach to art historical research in the Arab geocultural space. By employing methods of reconstruction and potential history, the workshop aims to challenge established historiographical categories and reveal forgotten narratives that exist between modernity and contemporaneity.
The project seeks to deconstruct traditional art historical canons by exploring alternative trajectories and overlooked perspectives. Through an interdisciplinary lens, participants will investigate how reconstruction can provide new insights into the complex artistic evolution of the Arab world, breaking free from rigid interpretative frameworks and uncovering the multiple potential paths of artistic expression that have been marginalized or forgotten.
